The web is based on content. An empty internet site has no significant
relevance. Alternatively, all other sites contain content of some sort or the
other. As all sites are built around a narrow or broad topic, it is text that
is the most important type of content and text is made up of words. Within
these words are keywords which are individual words or phrases that define the
topic or niche the site is all about. In order to understand how important
keywords are, you have to understand how they interconnect the three main
players in the online world. These are the site creators, the search engines
and the searchers.
1. The site creator is the person who creates a site on the internet. From
the site creator's point of view, you have to understand what happens when a
site is created. A brand new content site is unknown to the search engines.
When the site is populated with content and related keywords, it will usually
contain coding that will tell the spiders where to look for keywords when they
arrive at the new site. The site creator has 2 options: wait for the spiders
to arrive to the new site or announce the new site to the search engines so
that they send their spiders quickly. The site creator wants the site to be
indexed quickly so that the site does not remain unknown in cyberspace.
Another desirable option would be that the site is ranked highly so that it
gains search engine visibility, prestige and traffic. In the latter case,
Search Engine Optimization techniques might have been used to tweak the site
to increase the possibility of ranking highly.
2. Search engines are constantly sending out spiders that crawl the web and
indexing the sites they find if given permission by the site creator. In
simple terms and without getting too technical, a search engine has certain
algorithms that tell it what and where to look for these keywords. These sites
are then indexed according to the relevance of the keywords found. The task of
the search engine is to bring the site creator and the searcher together.
3. The searcher is the last player. When a person searches for something on
the internet, they type in a keyword or keyword phrase relating to their
query. The search engine then goes through its database. Using a simplistic
view, it links up the keywords which have been typed in by the searcher to the
web pages containing matching and relevant keywords it has already indexed for
that particular query. It then ranks what it thinks are the most appropriate
matches on the first page of its results and keeps on displaying the lesser
relevant results on subsequent pages Want to discover how keywords can be used to create
